A genetically modified organism (GMO) or genetically engineered organism (GEO) is an organism whose genetic material has been altered using genetic engineering techniques. These techniques are generally known as recombinant DNA technology. With recombinant DNA technology, DNA molecules from different sources are combined in vitro into one molecule to create a new gene. This DNA is then transferred into an organism and causes the expression of modified or novel traits.

Genetically modified (GM) foods are foods produced from GMO that have had their DNA altered through genetic engineering. GM foods were first put on the market in the early 1990s. The most common modified foods are derived from plants: soybean, corn, canola cotton seed oil and wheat.

GE Food - The Threat To Organics

It was more than ten years since GE foods hit the scene. If GE food crop production solved our problems?

What is GE

GE stands for genetic engineering. Other terms used are genetically modified organism, GMO or genetically modified food.

Every living organism is made up of DNA. This DNA determines what the organism is, if you have a cat or soya beans. It also determines characteristics of the living species. For example, blue eyes or brown eyes.

The all the DNA is known as "genetic blueprint" .

genetic engineering or genetic modification is to change or alteration of the genetic characteristics by inserting genes and DNA segments at the molecular level .

This is unlike traditional breeding, which for centuries. The difference is that specific characteristics can be transferred between the life forms that are not transferred to their own character. The scientists can genes from bacteria or insects in plants.

The scientific claim is that this method is very precise and demanding, because only a particular gene is transferred.

That may be true. Only a particular gene, responsible for a particular feature is transferred.

However, let's look a little closer ...

We know that the amount of DNA makes the whole. We know DNA interaction with each other in determining the outcome. That is the reason why you would have a human or a pig. Two types, which produce similar DNA, but another result.

So, ask yourself "How can a change inherited no influence on the news and the interaction between all the DNA?"

Transferring of genetic material is not as easy as it portrays.

If science, where simple, it would not happen, of course every day?

No, the methods would be a "gene gun" to shoot directly DNA into the cells. Another method is the "Gen shuttle". This would be infectious bacterium, that the gene across. The problem is that science can not control, where the bacterial DNA in the target language life.

Scientists with one day as well. This is a "marker" gene to identify the plants, in the change.

So far, we have two genetic changes. But they need a third. And this is something that activate the new genes. To do this, the new genes must be in connection with "promoter" sequences. This promoter sequences come from viral gene or even other plants.

Ok, we now have the basics. But how does this affect the food supply?

Currently genetically modified crops are corn, canola, soybean and Canada. In the U.S., alfalfa, tomatoes and cotton are also allowed.

GM sugar beets are planted for the first time since 2008 in Canada.

The genetic changes are that they are insect resistant and /or herbicide tolerant.

Now these features are in our ecology. From there, the natural flow of seeds and pollen carries them where they contaminate other crops.

This is a threat to farmers, buffer zones in force. But there is no guarantee and no security protocol to prevent the natural spread of contamination seeds.

With, agriculture exports are threatened. Crops could be banned for export to countries that do not allow GM. A threat to organic farming and farmers do not use GM seeds.

Since 2000, the use of pesticides in the height GM crops. A tolerance develops. If this is not enough of a threat, these seeds are patented. The companies themselves and they want to be paid for these plants. These companies have sued the farmers because the GM crops on their fields. Plants were annoyed that it contamination.

The contamination of rape of GM oilseed rape in the Canadian prairie was so significant that almost all organic farmers can not grow rape anymore.

Monsanto, seed producer, acquired 70% of the world market with their genetically modified herbicide tolerant soybeans in 2006.

That 's 70% of the planet soybeans in 2006 were genetically modified. What happens if contamination spread to the other 30%?

What does this mean for you?

The three great cultures that are the GM maize, soya and three canola.

These clearly used in processed foods. So much so that it estimates 70% of all processed foods in North America contains genetically modified ingredients. The exact number is almost impossible to know, because food manufacturers can not know when they get gm ingredients for their products. And labeling is voluntary.

Further, science has not stopped. Science has created "pharmaceutical" corn. Corn is genetically modified with medicines. The idea for the drug against humans or animals. What occurred was that in 2002 this experiment contaminated maize and other 500 000 bushels conventional maize had destroyed.

Currently the U.S. government Web site experiments with genetically modified bananas to immunize people against hepatitis B.

What You Can Do

1. Avoid food.

2 processed. Buy organic tofu, soy sauce or rapeseed oil. Organic production is not possible GM.

3. Write your representatives, let them know that your position on this issue.

4. Support farmers in your area.

When you know about something, then you have potential to control, you know. What will you change?
