A genetically modified organism (GMO) or genetically engineered organism (GEO) is an organism whose genetic material has been altered using genetic engineering techniques. These techniques are generally known as recombinant DNA technology. With recombinant DNA technology, DNA molecules from different sources are combined in vitro into one molecule to create a new gene. This DNA is then transferred into an organism and causes the expression of modified or novel traits.

Genetically modified (GM) foods are foods produced from GMO that have had their DNA altered through genetic engineering. GM foods were first put on the market in the early 1990s. The most common modified foods are derived from plants: soybean, corn, canola cotton seed oil and wheat.

Vanishing Bee Colonies, Doomsday Scenarios and Sunspots

Albert Einstein once said: "If the bee disappeared from the surface of the globe then man would only have four years to live. No more bees, no more pollination, no more plants, no more animals, no more people."

Apocalyptic safe . We have not reached that point yet, but some worrisome indicators show dramatic drops in the bee population in the U.S. are likely to impact on crop production. This is not a small agricultural sector, either affected. In the U.S. bees powder more than $ 14 billion worth of seeds and plants disappear every year.

The bee phenomenon is not limited to the United States. In Europe, countries are experiencing varying degrees of what investigators describe as "colony collapse disorder" (CCD). Countries have taken place Germany, Switzerland, Spain, Portugal, Italy and Greece. But the heaviest losses have occurred in the United States. On the west coast holders have seen bee population losses in the 30 to 60 percent range. On the East Coast and Texas it gets as high as 70%. These drops are catastrophic for an industry believes that around 20% a decline in population to an off-season norm.

There are a number of different theories about why this happens. After looking at a cross-section of scientific opinion I tend to believe that the decline in the bee population is triggered by a variety of factors, rather than a single parent cause.

There is evidence that the immune system of bees has been done with a negative modern agricultural practices. These range from the use of insecticides to control the rearing of bees to an army of pollinators ready to service menu crops on schedule. Some researchers are of the opinion that genetically modified crops are a factor in the bee population decline. Stress is also in figures, given the fact that increased pressure, especially as their colonies, their habitat is squeezed each year due to urban development. Parasites are also an important issue. The varroa mite was introduced from Asia has proved to be problematic.

The decline in the health of the colonies can be demonstrated by research data. You know the problem has reached crisis levels, when a guy like Dennis van Englesdorp with the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture uses an analogy AIDS in an attempt to underline the seriousness of the threat of bee populations.

Researchers have discovered several co-infections in some existing Colonies, from which many were also infected with mushrooms, an indicator that the bees' immune systems were severely compromised. This can impair immune function related to genetically modified crops and scientists are currently working to try to determine all the possible connections. When you look at the statistics, however, on the surface it seems to be a generalized cause and effect pattern. In the U.S., the experience of the most serious bee losses, 40% of the corn is now a GM insect-resistant strain. In contrast, in Germany we are only 0.06% growth, especially in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and Brandenburg regions.

A number of previous studies examining whether genetically modified crops had a negative impact on bees. Such a study was held at the University of Jenna from 2001 to 2004. The researchers used a GM corn variety called Bt corn, a gene from a soil bacterium to make it insect-proof. In the first study seemed quite positive. There are no detectable adverse effects were observed during the bees from the Bt maize. Then researchers discovered that if the bees were attacked by a parasite that are part of the colony exposed to the Bt maize had a much lower ability to fight infections and showed much faster levels of decline.

There is a second set of factors If expresses its concern about quantum effects associated with magnetic fields and electromagnetic waves. The grate part of the losses occurring as a result of bees were not able to navigate back to their hives. Bees were expiring singly, in an apparently disoriented state far from the hive and can not simply due to the immune system issues.

There are two possible causes. One is our high-tech gadgetry, in particular mobile phone technology. The other thing when it may appear strange, refers to the so-called "sun spots" - the effect of solar energy activity.

At first glance it seems a little far-fetched to establish a connection between the life of bees and mobile phones. However, research suggests there may indeed something to this theory. German research has found that bees showed a significant change of behaviour, when in the vicinity of power lines, and a study at Landau University found that bees avoid returning to the hive, when mobile phones were nearby.

A study by the mathematician Barbara Shipman, offers one of the more fascinating ... One could even say, "esoteric" theories. A crucial aspect of bee activity hinges apparently in search of pollen sources and returning to the hive. According to Ms. Shipman This routine will be facilitated through the dance of bees. It points out that the dance is influenced by factors such as the polarization of light of the sun and variations in the Earth's magnetic field.

She goes further and suggests that if the bees are able to identify quarks. I think it's a leap to suggest that bees may be true of the quantum or even as a kind of frame of reference. My idea is that their activity is much more instinctive, based on their highly specialized circuits. Questions about whether or not they can exercise quarks seems almost a moot point, since there is no way to prove it.

Where the sunspot includes theory is that bees seem to be very sensitive to fluctuations in energy. A study exposed a colony on gamma-ray bursts of high intensity magnetic field and came to the conclusion that the bees' reactions showed a high sensitivity to nuclear magnetic resonance, or NMR. This happens when an electromagnetic wave is changing the orientation of the nuclei of atoms.

Some scientists are of the view that the next solar maximum could be one of the most intense ever. Mausumi Dikpati, an astronomer with the National Center for Atmospheric Research predicts a solar maximum for 2012, a phenomenon occurred that the last in 1958. The sunspot generated intense magnetism can be felt on earth. Dikpati even considers that it is possible, electronics, for example, GPS and cell phone technology. Since 24 solar cycle began in 2007 is estimated Mausumi's, it is possible that the behavior of bees is already done to a certain degree.

The dramatic decline in the bee population appear to be due to a combination of factors . Insecticides, crop engineering, shrinking habitats and parasites also have an impact on the overall health and immune system of bees. The other factor for the bee decline is probably due to side effects of technology and solar energy activity.
