What a Stale Argument!
Does policy has a place in genetically modified (GM) food debate? "No," is the obvious answer. Politics and science are such sworn enemies, that they are not eating the same plate. Politics thrive especially in propaganda, defamation, name-calling and personal satisfaction at the expense of the public interest. Science is anchored on verifiable facts, it is the goal, gentle, and seeks to make the world a better place for all us to live. You can not politicize science, unless you want to mediocrity.
One Jeffrey Smith, author of the book "Seeds of Deception", this week advised South Africans to avoid genetically modified food like the plague. Why ? South Africans to lose European beef and poultry markets, if they feed their livestock on genetically modified foods. To be on the safe side, South Africans should conventional feed. Pooh!
"There is a massive rejection of genetically modified ingredients in foods in Europe, and the growing demand that the animals are fed on conventional crops, "said Smith his audience. What a misleading message!
Deliberately misleading the public on an issue is both morally reprehensible and disgusting. Those who take advantage of the vulnerability of the poor Self-help profits risk isolation from the world. Why wrong to confuse? United States of America is a traditional producer of genetically modified food. The U.S. beef European markets have not shrunk as a result of the cultivation of GMOs.Latest statistics in the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) show beef and veal exports ballooned from 461 million pounds in 2004 to 615 billion pounds in 2005. Grate part of the exports went to European markets. Smith lives in the United States and would be clear his audience. If he did so, I would not be here this article.
Europe Penning, itself, is fast embracing genetically modified foods. Last month, the European Union has the import of genetically modified feed. Did Smith want to say South Africa, Europe is shooting itself in the foot?
Already, farmers in five European Union countries, including France and Germany grow genetically modified foods. They have not lost their beef and poultry. In Spain, GM maize harvest this year will top 50000 hectares, of which all are used as cattle feed. Spain's beef markets in Europe remain intact. They are not suspended. These are hard facts and no amount of propaganda and grandstanding will change. Let & # 39;'s pragmatic during the debate on the issue of genetically modified food. This is the only way to provide consumers with information on decisons.
Debate pros and cons of genetically modified food is a luxury for Africa. Someone should not believe that Africa is that they would lose markets monitored for the cultivation of genetically modified food. Africa can not feed itself now. Women and children dying in Niger, Ethiopia, Eritrea and hunger. Priority, now should not be to grow food for exports, but the hungry and malnourished. Africa frightened that they will lose markets monitored, the car before horse.
