A genetically modified organism (GMO) or genetically engineered organism (GEO) is an organism whose genetic material has been altered using genetic engineering techniques. These techniques are generally known as recombinant DNA technology. With recombinant DNA technology, DNA molecules from different sources are combined in vitro into one molecule to create a new gene. This DNA is then transferred into an organism and causes the expression of modified or novel traits.

Genetically modified (GM) foods are foods produced from GMO that have had their DNA altered through genetic engineering. GM foods were first put on the market in the early 1990s. The most common modified foods are derived from plants: soybean, corn, canola cotton seed oil and wheat.

Interview With Sandra Powers, Author of "Organic for Health"

Sandra Powers is here to tell us about their incredible journey as a survivor of breast cancer, and how their lifestyle changed to eat healthy organic food.

Tyler: Welcome, Sandra. I am thrilled that you are here and now. We all want to be healthier, and I know you have a great story to tell us how healthy with organic foods. To begin, you tell us a little about your journey as a cancer survivor and how your interest in organic foods began?

Sandra: hi, Tyler. I am delighted to be here with you. My journey began in August 2005, when I diagnosed with breast cancer and liver disease. I had a mastectomy for breast cancer, but I could not undergo any further cancer treatment, because my liver unhealthy. Every three months for the next few years, I had a liver function test and the results were always the same-my liver was not good. My doctor was very concerned and wanted to start the treatment for my liver. A year after cancer surgery, and I was still not good. I thought it was time to try to heal myself. I was on my own guinea pig. I researched everything I could find on recurrence of cancer and liver disease. Certain words kept cracking: toxic pesticides, toxic fertilizers, herbicides, hormones, antibiotics, vitamins and mineral supplements. So, that was where I began: with organic foods and stop the multiple vitamin and mineral supplements supplements.

Tyler: Sandra, define for us exactly what qualifies as organic food?

Sandra: Better yet, I will let the US Department of Agriculture define organic food for you. The U.S.D.A. Did the contract that no organic food can be added hormones, antibiotics, synthetic pesticides, components irradiated, genetically modified organisms, sewage or reprocessed. What does this mean? This means that conventionally grown foods. Scary, is not it?

Tyler: Why does the USDA this distinction? Why not just plug in all such processes foods?

Sandra: Believe it or not, Tyler, these high standards set by the USDA for organic food were at the insistence of the bio-operators. The grate organic producers wanted a national definition of organic produce, instead of the various governmental regulations. The first U.S.D.A. Guidelines were much more relaxed when they were first published in mid-1990. After receiving thousands of letters from longtime organic farmers and consumers, the USDA set the definition in use today. It is highly unlikely that the interests of big agri-business companies would lobby for this costly standards.

Tyler: How have your eating habits changed since you were first with the diagnosis of breast cancer?

Sandra: The first change I have to eat after breast cancer diagnosis was switching to organic milk. Conventionally raised dairy cows are injected with hormones to increase milk production. This increase in the milk production requires frequent milking, which in turn leads to irritation and udder infections that antibiotics. Unfortunately, the infections are not always very clear, so that the government allows a certain amount of pus remain in the milk. Need I say more? Conventionally raised chickens are antibiotics, growth promoters and performance feed additives. Organic chicken was my second switch, followed by organic eggs. Then I began my replace fruits and vegetables with organic fruits and vegetables for the elimination of toxic pesticides and fertilizers from my diet. I realized how much better I felt in a few weeks, and my liver began to heal. In six months, my liver back to normal, my total cholesterol dropped 40 points, my good cholesterol rose by 40 points, even my bad cholesterol dropped a few points. My doctor was so excited about my test results, he gave me a copy of it. "

Tyler: What kind of cost is eating organic foods? Have you grocery bill significantly increase?

Sandra: organic food is more expensive than conventionally grown foods because organic food more expensive to produce. It is a lower yield in cultures with safer pesticides and fertilizers. Technical approval milk cows for the production of milk in a natural way and letting beef and chicken grow without performance promoters, antibiotics, hormones and take some time. However, if we factor in the benefits of a healthier diet for a long period of time, the costs are probably competitive. But how can we win the major health benefits of organic foods without bankrupting our lives today-budget? We slowly make the switch. We start with the food we eat, often, such as milk, eggs and poultry meat. These foods have some of the highest concentrations of added hormones, antibiotics and additives. We get the healthiest benefits immediately. These foods also have the best competitive prices because they store brands. Look for the sales. Even the business to buy brand organics fresh, canned or frozen.

Tyler: "Bio for the health," warns us about some of the threats to our food, such as pesticides. Why in this modern day, we need to worry about our daily food is dangerous for our bodies?

Sandra: The answer is intensive agriculture. Intensive agriculture is concerned with productivity. To a high productivity, efficient pesticides, fertilizers powerful, additives and growth regulators used. During the intensive agriculture provides large quantities of relatively cheap food, it is at the expense of the harmful effects on our health and the environment. The quest for profit at any price for our milk and poultry, as we already mentioned.

Tyler: One thing that you mentioned that you go on besides organic food was to see the entire multi-vitamins and supplements? Why did you do that?

Sandra: Good question, Tyler. We are bombarded with health benefits mutiple of vitamins and minerals, if they actually do more harm than good. The liver is a storage unit. Vitamin A and vitamin E are especially a problem for the liver with overdose. The Journal of the American Medical Association published a study on the vitamin A supplements and E. The study showed that daily intake of vitamin A supplements increased death by 16%, vitamin E to 4%. The Annuals of Internal Medicine published a study on vitamin E supplements. They found that the daily intake of vitamin E in quantities of 400 IU for a year or more increases the risk of death. In fact, the researchers went so far as to recommend that all sellers of vitamins should be the elimination of vitamin E supplements of 400 IU or more from the shops. These are just two of many reports on the harmful effects of several supplements. It is much healthier for your vitamins and minerals from organic food.

Tyler: Stress is a major cause of illness of the body. How does the organic food and helps the body deal with stress?

Sandra: First of all, stress is a killer. Stress is either the cause or amplification of many diseases. Two important ways to deal with stress is meditation and organic foods. Daily meditation release the body much of its undesirable stress. I have a chapter in the book to help you learn how to meditate. Meditation is a healer of the spirit, while organic food is the healer of the body. Organic food is in a position to deal with daily stress, your immune system in tip-top shape. It is able to do this because organic foods contain more antioxidants and immune-booster than conventionally grown foods. In a recent study reported by BBC News, organic fruits have higher antioxidant levels than conventionally grown foods. Rutgers University tested conventional vegetables organically grown vegetables. The organically grown vegetables had significantly higher levels of iron, magnesium, potassium and calcium than the conventionally grown vegetables.

Tyler: Sandra, will you tell us a little bit about the anti-oxidant recipes in the book?

Sandra: The recipes in "Bio for health" are packed with antioxidants and immune boosters. I developed and adapted the recipes to give maximum health benefits through the use of organic ingredients. After each recipe is a paragraph explaining the health benefits. Here are just a few of the health benefits in the pineapple bread recipe: "Bio-pineapple juice stimulates the kidneys and aids in the removal of toxic elements from the body. Organic walnuts in lowing bad cholesterol. Olive oil helps reduce arthritis and inflammation because of its antioxidants. "

Tyler: How long have you now free of cancer, and what specifically will you do to prevent its recurrence?

Sandra: Cancer is a frightening diagnosis. Each cancer survivor tried to have a positive attitude to combat repetition, but a positive attitude has little effect on the prognosis of cancer. What a cancer survivor has to do is the study of cancer and his work clearly a plan to optimize their health. I have a 20% chance of recurrence of the disease. With the consumption of organic food, which already healed my liver and meditate daily stress to keep my body in check, I am confident I live a long and productive life. It's been 2 and 1 /2 years, I have been diagnosed with cancer and liver diseases, and I feel better than I years.

Tyler: Do you have a response from readers, or even friends and family members, before the publication of the book ? Have they reported better health as a result of following your instructions, or try one of the recipes in the book?

Sandra: My daughters are organic food to eat and have more energy. My grandchildren are also on an organic diet. They are 3 and 7 years old, we have no descriptions of them, but I am sure that they reap the rewards. My nephew, liver disease, reports since the end of its multiple vitamins and eat mostly organic, its energy have improved. I am pleased that the reader reviews on Amazon.com are fairly inexpensive on the recipes.

Tyler: Do you have any advice for the parent who previously liberal with Saigkeiten and fast food, her child to get on organic food ?

Sandra: My daughter had no problems with their children if the taste buds, she moved from traditional foods to organics. Organic food tastes so much better than conventionally grown foods, especially fruits. Saigkeiten and Fast Food? Bio-cookies are delicious. Chocolate? Buy the dark chocolate with antioxidants. My grandchildren love it.

Tyler: What advice would you give to people who are busy eating on the go and who know that they should eat better, but can be found in the drive-thru at McDonalds? Where should they find organic food? What if they do not have time to cook? What should they do?

Sandra: Tough question, Tyler. I would say, first, "Do not obsess." What did you have for breakfast? Toast and coffee? Spread toast with butter or organic organic jelly. The coffee, Newman's organic coffee. Cereal? There is a lot of organic cereals to choose from. Make sure you are using organic milk. Lunch? McDonalds? Okay. Style, the "bad things" during lunch with a snack of organic fruit. Dinner time have an organic salad and one of the recipes in main dishes. Most of the recipes are not much preparation time. If you really do not want to "cook", a bio-grilled steak or a bio-beef patties, or open a can of organic soup, with your organic salad. Look at your favorite store for organic foods. You will be surprised at the offer. It is beginning to rival traditional foods to the organic frozen dinners.

I was once asked about the popular descriptor from the 1970's, "You are what you eat." Changes that I am on "Your health depends on what you eat." There is an old saying: "Every man is the author of his own health." It all depends on the type of book that you want write.

Tyler: Sandra, where you will find organic food? Do grocery stores have set up special sections, or you need to visit a food co-op?

Sandra: When I started organic food to eat, I was forced to a lot of Internet shopping. In the last two years, mainstream grocery stores have exploded with organics. Organic fruit and vegetables are in special sections. Canned organics are usually mixed with other canned. Grain can be used in an organic section or mixed with other cereals. It seems that most shops have special sections for organic agriculture but also mix, especially with organic flour, organic sugar, organic jams and jellies, biotechnology and peanut butter. Even after the sales.

Tyler: What do you think is the future of the food industry? Organic foods are becoming increasingly gone mainstream? If the USDA need to do more, or are the needs of the profits go to our conventional food dangerous for us?

Sandra: The future of the food industry is always with the profit and that is why so much of organic products is now brought to you by as traditional companies such as General Mills, Heinz, Philip Morris and the force. The large conventional food processors in the organic market because it is a good business. Organics are the only sector of the food industry experiencing sustained growth. Organics already for the mainstream. What is more mainstream than Wal-Mart, where I buy my gold medal organic flour?

I believe that our food supply is always made conventionally grown food and organically grown foods. While organic farming is more competitive with conventional foods, which they will always cost a little more, like frozen broccoli florets brocccoli more expensive than the stems. It is for the consumers who choice.

Tyler: Thank you for me today for the candidate, Sandra. Before we go, will you tell us about your site and what additional information may be found there?

Sandra: Thank you, Tyler, for me. It's been fun. My site, www.organicforhealthsite.com, has continued exchange information on organic farming and new recipes. If you have any questions or suggestions for me, please click on my e-mail address on the website and I will be sure to get back to you. Thank you, again, and good health.
