A genetically modified organism (GMO) or genetically engineered organism (GEO) is an organism whose genetic material has been altered using genetic engineering techniques. These techniques are generally known as recombinant DNA technology. With recombinant DNA technology, DNA molecules from different sources are combined in vitro into one molecule to create a new gene. This DNA is then transferred into an organism and causes the expression of modified or novel traits.

Genetically modified (GM) foods are foods produced from GMO that have had their DNA altered through genetic engineering. GM foods were first put on the market in the early 1990s. The most common modified foods are derived from plants: soybean, corn, canola cotton seed oil and wheat.

Health Insurance For All - Panacea or Peril?

There is a strong impetus for all Americans access to health insurance. While this may seem logical and beneficial to the surface, we must dig deeper. The real problem is that we want all American children, pregnant women, young parents, self-employed, the working poor, and older people have access to quality health care. The problem is that is not what universal health coverage. There are enormous problems inherent in the current system of health care, and the expansion of the system to more people is faulty shortsighted.

The current system reimbursed services provided by conventional medicine to ignore, while effective treatments with the potential to diseases or to abolish them. Ensuring adequate nutrients to support the body to rid itself of disease is not covered, nor are detoxification strategies for the safe disposal of the deadly toxins that the body of our lives. These two factors are the cause of almost all the chronic diseases that plague our nation and threaten our health bankruptcy system. But these services are neglected in the current payer system, which serves to benefit the expensive patented drugs and expensive diagnostic procedures currently in medical care.

By extending health care for all, we are extending the ability to afford expensive drugs with dangerous side effects effects, while not to provide effective prevention of diseases through less costly measures such as providing all children with healthy foods that are not laced with pesticides, life-giving water that is not loaded with toxic chemicals, and access to medical Service providers, to test and treat deficiency diseases and toxic exposures before (and after) diseases have a chance to develop. (Many of these proven preventive and medical tests are not covered by the conventional system)

Extending the current medical model serves only to use our tax dollars to expand the market for the pharmaceutical and medical diagnostic equipment companies use with their expensive products and services. Patients with existing coverage are forced to pay from their own pocket for the services they really want and need, when they are sick. These benefits are not part of the conventional medical system and are rarely covered.

While at a meeting pharmaceutically supported earlier this week, an expensive new drug was discussed. If the physician assistants present inquired about the cost of the new drug, which was an outrageous 3 U.S. dollars per pill, the pharmaceutical agent simply told not to worry about the price, because it would be covered by insurance. I have heard that message repeatedly from drug reps, but it is not an appropriate response. These pills can be covered by insurance, but we are indirectly paying the price of our astronomical health insurance premiums, if we are lucky to cover. So by prescribing expensive drugs or take, we are indirectly responsible for the increase in premiums and off more and more people from the health sector system.

It is time for a change. It is time we spent our hard earned money in technologies to prevent disease rather than expensive treatments that line corporate pockets. Every American citizen should have access to a water treatment system or a public water supply, not loaded with toxic chemicals. Toxic Releases should be reduced further to ensure that every American has clean air to breathe. Residues of pesticides, irradiation, growth hormones, genetically modified, additive-free foods should be offered affordable prices for all Americans, not just the rich. "Polluter pays" Companies should be held accountable and easy to clean, medium (after all they are making a fortune at the expense of our air and water quality), the taxpayers do not leave the cost, while the executives of companies are proposed on the wrist and left with sufficient resources to access other pollutants endeavors.

If these changes have been made, we would see a dramatic reduction in the incidence of acute and chronic diseases in adults as well as our precious children. There is a reason that the cancer rate of 1 to 8000 in 1901 to almost 1 to 2 today. Disputes about how to pay for coverage of expensive treatments is a mute point. Let's prevent the Americans from sick in the first place! This is not an unrealistic goal if we stop sponsoring pharmaceutical and diagnostic companies through third-party payers and the fight against corporate pollution.
